The 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budōkai (第22回天下一武道会, Dai-Nijūnikai Tenka-Ichi Budōkai; Viz "Return to the Tournament"; Literally meaning "The 22nd Number One Under the Heavens Martial Arts Gathering") is the tenth volume of the Dragon Ball manga.

Chapter 109

"The Pilaf Gang's Second Attempt" (ピラフ一味の再挑戦, Pirafu Ichimi no Saichōsen; Viz "A Second Helping of Pilaf")

After finding out the location of the Dragon Ball, Gokū flies off on Kintoun towards the car that Baba told him it was in. Driving the car is revealed to be none other than Pilaf, along with Shū and Mai. Pilaf is surely confident he'll get his wish, despite having no idea what he intends to do once he rules the world. Goku catches up to them, landing on the car and demanding their Dragon Ball. Upon remembering each other, Mai nearly crashes the car.

Gokū recognizes the group as the ones who tried to kill them; Mai notes that it is a bad thing that Gokū came searching for them. Pilaf, on the other hand, thinks it is to their advantage, and they can just grab his tail to exploit his weakness. Pilaf challenges Gokū to a duel, and if Gokū wins, he'll give up his Dragon Ball. If Pilaf wins, Gokū will surrender his six instead. Gokū agrees, and Mai, Pilaf, and Shū throw Hoi Poi Capsules, releasing three mecha suits to fight Gokū in.

Despite their intimidating appearance, Gokū wasn't frightened, and easily dispatched Pilaf's mecha suit.

Chapter 110

"Pilaf's Great Strategy" (ピラフの大作戦, Pirafu no Daisakusen; Viz "The Pilaf Machine")

Gokū laments the fact that Pilaf and his gang aren't strong, but Pilaf isn't deterred. He orders the execution of their plan; to exploit Gokū's tail against him. Unaware that Gohan ripped Gokū's tail off, however, the group surrounds him, only to be unable to see his tail. Believing Gokū to be hiding it, they distract him and grab the boy, burning his pants off. Pilaf moves in to grab his tail, but can't see it, as it has been removed. The half-naked Gokū breaks free of Mai's grip, but the Pilaf gang merges their mechanical suits.

Gokū resorts to the Kamehameha, using a "light" one to completely blow off the arm of one of the mechanical suits. Mai ditches her suit, jumping into the new merged form, type "Ostrich". The group make a break for, it, only for the young Gokū to pursue. In desperation, they fire a missile at him. Gokū grabs the missile, hurling it back at them and destroying the machine. As his prize, Gokū claims the Dragon Ball, and Shū's clothes.

Chapter 111

"Once Again, Shenron!!" (神龍再び!!, Shenron Futatabi!!; Viz "Reenter the Dragon"; Literally meaning "Once Again, Dragon God!!")

An elated Gokū flies back to Uranai Baba's palace and shows Upa and the rest of the Dragon Team his retrieval of the last Dragon Ball. After a brief conversation with the team, Gokū calls upon his Kintoun for one last trip, and takes Upa with him back to the Karin Holy Land. As the rest of the Dragon Team briefly comment after Gokū's departure, Uranai Baba prognosticates that Gokū, with his amazing prowess, will save the world one day, astonishing the team.

Once they land in the Karin Holy Land, Gokū calls upon Shenron, and the dragon god's appearance leaves both Gokū and Upa in awe. After Shenron requests the wish, Gokū gets Upa to ask the dragon for the revival of his deceased father, which Shenron easily grants, causing Upa's father to emerge out of his grave.

Chapter 112

"Run! Son Gokū" (駆けろ!孫悟空, Kakero! Son Gokū; Viz "Go, Gokū, Go!")

After Upa tearfully embraces with his father, Upa informs his father that he was revived from his death by the Dragon Balls. As Shenron disappears and before the Dragon Balls scatter, Gokū targets the four star Dragon Ball and jumps up to grab it. The young boy then explains to Upa that he jumped in order to catch his grandfather's four star Dragon Ball, and explains that the balls are inactive for a year before becoming usable once again. After Upa's father shows his gratitude to Gokū, the young boy departs the Karin Holy Land and meets up with the rest of the Dragon Team.

After a brief conversation, Gokū announces his intentions to train for the next Tenka-Ichi Budōkai, leading Yamcha to reveal that he will become a disciple under Kame-Sennin. Gokū is exuberant at the opportunity to train with Kulilin and Yamcha under Kame-Sennin, but the turtle hermit informs Gokū that he is too strong and has nothing else to learn from him. Kame-Sennin then suggests to Gokū to travel the world and train, and meet the turtle hermit at the next Tenkaichi Budōkai. Kame-Sennin also reveals that the time period between each tournament has been reduced from five years to three due to the growing number of contestants.

Before Gokū departs, the young boy once again calls upon his Kintoun, but Kame-Sennin instructs him to travel the world without the flying cloud to further enhance his training, which Gokū accepts after initial hesitation from both he and the rest of the Dragon Team. After Gokū leaves, and after Uranai Baba motivates Kame-Sennin not to let Gokū outdo him, the turtle hermit instructs the rest of the team to run back to the Kame House as Gokū journeys around the world.

Chapter 113

"The 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budōkai" (第22回天下一武道会, Dai-Nijūnikai Tenka-Ichi Budōkai; Viz "Return to the Tournament"; Literally meaning "The 22nd Number One Under the Heavens Martial Arts Gathering")

After three years, the Dragon Team have prepared for the 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budōkai. Muten Rōshi, Bulma, Kulilin, Yamcha, Puar, Oolong, and Lunch make their way towards Papaya Island by plane, eagerly anticipating both the Budōkai and their reunion with Gokū. Humorously, Lunch and Rōshi are plagued by problems — fighting the desire to hijack the plane and use the restroom respectively.

After the plane lands, and Muten Rōshi holds up the group with his restroom trip, the Dragon Team makes their way towards the arena. Yamcha and Kulilin register for the tournament, and Rōshi, after checking whether Gokū had registered, discreetly registers as 'Jackie Chun'. With three more minutes until the registers close, Muten Rōshi encounters an old 'friend', Tsuru Sennin. The two bicker angrily, and Tsuru Sennin declares that his two disciples will be the both the victors and stars of the Budōkai this time, not Rōshi's. When Tsuru Sennin leaves, Rōshi explains that he was his former rival.

With only a minute left for registration, Yamcha asks Puar to transform into Gokū, so he would be registered even if he's late. Gokū arrives, however, at the last second, and Rōshi hurriedly registers him. The boy explains his lateness away by saying he swam all the way from Yahhoy — a distant city well on the other side of the world. Changing into his regular Turtle School dōgi, Gokū, Kulilin, and Yamcha enter the preliminaries, where they encounter Jackie Chun once more. Outside, naturally, Rōshi is nowhere to be seen. Gokū eagerly tells Jackie Chun that he wants to be the one to win this time; to himself, Jackie admits that he's been secretly training for this, and doesn't have the intention of losing.

Chapter 114

"Surviving the Preliminaries" (予選サバイバル, Yosen Sabaibaru; Viz "The Qualifying Rounds")

After Gokū, Kulilin, Yamcha and Jackie Chun figure out their places in the tournament bracket, the rules and regulations are announced as everyone heads to their respective block. Yamcha is up first in the preliminaries, and followed by Kulilin, and both manage to knockout their opponents with one move. While earning Gokū's praise, they both also receive the criticism of Tenshinhan, a pupil of Muten Rōshi's rival, Tsuru Sennin.

After mixed reactions from Turtle School, Tenshinhan begins his match, and defeats his opponent in a series of nearly undetectable moves. While Gokū is impressed and Kulilin is unimpressed, Tenshinhan reveals he was holding back. Gokū's match is up next, and he faces off against the deadly King Chapa, who allegedly won the Tenka-Ichi Budōkai without an injury. Gokū and King Chapa take their stances against each other as the match begins.

Chapter 115

"Surviving the Preliminaries, Part 2" (予選サバイバルその2, Yosen Sabaibaru Sono Ni; Viz "King Chappa")

As Gokū and King Chapa face off, Jackie Chun and Yamcha anticipate a difficult match for Gokū. However, the young boy manages to outpace the king, forcing Chapa to use his special technique. This fails as Gokū blocks all of the king's punches, trips the king, and jumps into the air. Gokū, unable to move freely in the air, falls down towards Chapa, only to momentarily stop himself in mid-air by expelling his breath like an explosive blast in order to kick and knock out the king. As the spectators are stunned and amazed, Gokū reveals he was holding back, shocking his fellow pupils and leading Chun to foresee a tough tournament even for himself.

After Chun knocks out his opponent, Yamcha anticipates an amazing tournament, but not after the students of the Turtle School and Jackie Chun advance to become part of the eight finalists. As the trio of Rōshi's pupils inform Bulma, Lunch, Oolong and Umigame of their victories, they wonder of Rōshi's whereabouts, only for the turtle hermit to reveal himself to be watching the fights in secret. As the Tenka-Ichi Budōkai begins, Lunch, using her aggressive side, manages to get a front-row seat for the Dragon Team from threatening others in the audience by shooting a pistol in the air.

Chapter 116

"Manufactured Matchups" (つくられた対戦表, Tsukurareta Taisenhyō; Viz "The Doctored Lottery")

As the eight finalists await the lottery, Tenshinhan continues to chastise Kame-Sennin's students, leading Yamcha and Kulilin to confront Tenshinhan and Chaozu, respectively. After Tenshinhan orders Chaozu to stop the bickering, the announcer begins the lottery. Tenshinhan notices one of the contestants bearing a grudge against Jackie Chun, and subsequently, he instructs Chaozu to manipulate the lottery picks.

During the process of everyone receives their numbers, there is a lot of confrontation, such as Man Wolf becoming irate over being referred to as "Wolf Man," and being exhilarated at the chance to face Jackie Chun. Soon afterwards, the rest of the matchups end up being Tenshinhan versus Yamcha, Kulilin versus Chaozu, and Gokū versus Panput. After Tenshinhan further insults Kame-Sennin's students, he thanks Chaozu for setting up the fights.

Meanwhile, Bulma, Oolong and Pu'ar are frustrated with Kame-Sennin's disappearance after Lunch, oblivious to this, managed to get the Dragon Team a front row seat. The 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budōkai commences with Yamcha facing off versus Tenshinhan, and the animosity between the schools of Kame Sennin and Tsuru Sennin is palpable as the duel begins.

Chapter 117

"Yamcha's Kamehameha" (ヤムチャのかめはめ波, Yamucha no Kamehameha; Viz "Yamcha's Kamehameha!"; Literally meaning "Yamcha's Turtle Destruction Wave")

As Bulma, Puar and Kulilin are confident Yamcha will win easily, while Gokū is wary of Tenshinhan's strength, the matchup between Yamcha and Tenshinhan commences. The two fighters combat each other back and forth, exchanging blows, impressing the audience and both each other. The two contestants then begin to amp it up, with Yamcha using his Wolf Fang Wind Style Fist, but he is eventually beaten back by Tenshinhan. Yamcha then resorts to using a Kamehameha wave, surprising both Kulilin and Jackie Chun, and Tenshinhan prepares to defend himself against his opponent's attack.

Chapter 118

"Yamcha Broken!!" (ヤムチャ破れる!!, Yamucha Yabureru!!; Viz "The Cruelty of Tenshinhan")

As Yamcha's Kamehameha mounts towards Tenshinhan, the latter proceeds to deflect the former's attack, forcing Yamcha to jump up in the air to dodge, with the attack devastating the audience. In the air, Yamcha cannot move freely, and Tenshinhan exploits this disadvantage for Yamcha by kicking him down, and then breaking his left leg while he's down. As this distresses the spectating audience, the announcer declares Yamcha unable to continue the match, leading a distraught Puar to shapeshift into a magic carpet in order to take Yamcha into the hospital.

Gokū criticizes Tenshinhan for his cruelty and vows to avenge Yamcha in the ring. While Tsuru Sennin chuckles over the cruelty of his Crane School, the next match is Jackie Chun versus Man Wolf. Before the match, as Tenshinhan informs Chaoz that the Turtle School is stronger than he anticipated but still expects victory, Chun praises Gokū for his maturity during the excruciating finish to the duel between Yamcha and Tenshinhan, all while Man Wolf is eager to face Chun.

Chapter 119

"The Full Moon Grudge" (満月の恨み, Mangetsu no Urami)

As Jackie Chun and Man Wolf face off, the latter reveals his vendetta against the former for Chun destroying the moon, making him, a once flirtatious man, be stuck as a wolf. The match commences, and Man Wolf charges towards Chun a multitude of times, only to be embarrassed by Chun. On the sidelines, Tenshinhan tells Chaoz that he anticipates that he'll face Chun in the semi-finals, while Gokū and Kulilin watch in awe as the two students of the Crane School are able to fly.

Man Wolf continues to be outclassed by Chun, and the creature decides to take out a knife regardless of the rules prohibiting weapons, intending to kill Chun. Jackie Chun still manages to overwhelm and frustrate Man Wolf, and offers to transform the wolf back into a man if he surrenders. Unwilling to listen to Chun, Man Wolf attempts to attack his opponent, but Jackie Chun brings out the dog qualities of the wolf and forces Man Wolf into a ring-out, winning the match.

An exasperated Man Wolf storms in Chun's direction again, but the latter uses Paralysis Technique on the former to immobilize the creature. Jackie Chun calls out to Kulilin to use his bald head in place of the full moon, and Chun proceeds to use hypnosis on the creature to convince the wolf that he is seeing a full moon, transforming the creature back into a man for good. Now a human, Man Wolf shows his gratitude towards Chun and apologizes for his hostility, resolving to flirt with girls once again. Afterwards, the next matchup begins featuring Kulilin and Chaoz.

Chapter 120

"An Unexpected Dodonpa" (なんとどどん波, Nanto Dodonpa; Viz "Look Out! The Dodon Blast!"; Literally meaning "An Unexpected Boom Wave")

The match between Kulilin and Chaozu begins, with both opponents exchanging blows and surprising each other with their speeds. Eventually, Chaozu is forced to fly in the air to avoid Kulilin's eventual onslaught, with Jackie Chun noting that Chaozu's ability to utilize the unique technique of flying from the Crane School. While a spectating Tenshinhan is rudely impressed by Chun's knowledge of the technique, the announcer is notes his surprise at Chaoz's flight as well.

While in the air, Chaoz surprises once again by firing a series of Dodonpa at Kulilin, with Gokū recognizing the technique from his encounter with Taopaipai. Tenshinhan and Jackie Chun are both stunned when they realize that Gokū was responsible of the death of Taopaipai, and Chun informs Gokū that the deceased hitman was Tsuru Sennin's younger brother.

As Kulilin struggles against Chaoz's assault and is forced to plan a Kamehameha attack, Tenshinhan informs Tsuru Sennin of Gokū killing his younger brother Taopaipai, forcing the hermit to instruct his pupil Chaozu to kill Kulilin for revenge against the Turtle School. Chaozu then prepares a full force Dodonpa, however, Kulilin also readies a Kamehameha.
