Freeza's Family are a Mutant race of an unnamed extraterrestrial species within the 6th and 7th Universe. The family is extinct within the 7th Universe, following the second death of Freeza.

Overview

Not much is known about the species as a whole, however, Freeza's family has been noted to be a particularly strong clan of mutants who possess violent tendencies and abnormal amounts of cruelty.[2] In the case of Freeza and his father, they use their incredible strength to rule over the 7th Universe's weaker races: leading to the creation of the Galactic Freeza Army, which invaded, enslaved, and sold planets for profit. Within the 6th Universe, Frost for a time was the emperor of his universe, who's strength lead him to be regarded as the strongest warrior of his cosmos.

The mutant subspecies that is Freeza's family are extremely xenophobic—believing themselves to be superior to all other species.[3][4][5] They also harbor an usually high prejudice against the Saiyans, whom they refer to as "monkeys" (猿, Saru).

Appearance

Freeza Without Fighting Jacket

It is unknown if normal Freeza’s family look anything like their mutant counterparts. Due to their ability to transform, the mutant variant can vary wildly in appearance. Common traits include humanoid shape; white or violet skin coloration; head horns; dark colored spots on their head, arms, and torso; markings along the sides of their faces; ear sockets on the side of their skulls; and large, three-toed feet.[6][3]

Their height can vary as well. For example, though Cold appeared to be in the second transformed state, he completely dwarfed Freeza in his true form, and whose second transformed state was only marginally larger than this true form.[6][7] Likewise, in the movies, Coola appears to be much larger in his true form than Freeza in his own true form.[3][8]

In terms of apparel, Freeza's family is primarily seen wearing the standard battle jacket of the Freeza Army. Freeza, in particular, also wore a black pair of legless shorts. Meanwhile, King Cold wore a large black cape.[6] Despite this, Freeza and Coola both are comfortable wearing no clothing whatsoever—a trait more common, in Freeza's case, when he fights.[9][10]

Abilities

The mutant-variant of the Freeza’s Family species appears to be terrifyingly powerful and use their power to subject those they see as lesser species. Because they are mutants, they are the only members of their species that possesses abnormally high power levels.[2] Freeza himself has both claimed and readily displayed the ability to completely obliterate entire planets with ease, a testament to the power of the mutant variant of the species.[11] In the movies, Coola demonstrated the same feat with his signature technique: the Gigantic Energy Bullet.[3]

Even if they were to destroy a planet they were currently on, Freeza noted that they could survive the blast as well as in the vacuum of space.[12] Additionally, it would seem that members of Freeza's family are capable of surviving horrific injuries. Freeza, himself, demonstrated the ability to survive being almost completely obliterated by the Super Saiyan Gokū and the subsequent explosion of Namek. In the movies, his brother Coola is also able to survive his collision with the Sun, albeit in a highly damaged state.[13] In both scenarios, they also showed the ability to adapt and become stronger thanks to cybernetic enhancements.[13][5]

Transformations

Golden Freeza

In the case of Freeza (and Coola in the movies), the mutant variant of the Freeza’s Family can create transformations in order to control their immense and sometimes uncontrollable power.[14] Freeza, for instance, created three transformed states in order to comfortably contain his power.[15] Freeza could then revert closer and closer to his true form in order to access more of his power in combat. After his revival and training for six months, however, Freeza demonstrated the opposite of this: transforming in order to increase his power, rather than control it. The result was a golden form that allowed him to fight, briefly, with the likes of Son Gokū and Vegeta, both of whom had become Super Saiyan Blues.[16] In the movies, Coola also demonstrated a similar ability, transforming beyond his true form in order to obtain more power. In his case, however, he was still inferior to Super Saiyan Gokū.[3]

Trivia

  • Freeza's race has never received an actual name within the anime or manga. They were only referred to as "Frost Demons" in the English version of the video game, Dragon Ball XenoVerse, when Cell engages a member of Freeza's family in battle. Beyond this, they are typically only referred to as the "Freeza Race" or the "Freeza Clan" in the video games.[17] In the manga, Cold mentions that the mutants of this race are from a singular clan — to whom he also belongs.[18]
  • Almost every member of the race has a name that is a pun in relation to the word "cold".
  • In the English dubbed anime, Freeza speaks in his native tongue, indicating that the Freeza’s Family have a language of their own.[19]
  • In Dragon Ball XenoVerse, Freeza states he is the ruler of his race.
