"Surviving the Preliminaries" (予選サバイバル, Yosen Sabaibaru; Viz "The Qualifying Rounds") is the one hundred fourteenth chapter of the Dragon Ball manga.
After Gokū, Kulilin, Yamcha and Jackie Chun figure out their places in the tournament bracket, the rules and regulations are announced as everyone heads to their respective block. Yamcha is up first in the preliminaries, and followed by Kulilin, and both manage to knockout their opponents with one move. While earning Gokū's praise, they both also receive the criticism of Tenshinhan, a pupil of Muten Rōshi's rival, Tsuru Sennin.
After mixed reactions from Turtle School, Tenshinhan begins his match, and defeats his opponent in a series of nearly undetectable moves. While Gokū is impressed and Kulilin is unimpressed, Tenshinhan reveals he was holding back. Gokū's match is up next, and he faces off against the deadly King Chapa, who allegedly won the Tenka-Ichi Budōkai without an injury. Gokū and King Chapa take their stances against each other as the match begins.
